Steven Gerrard urges Aston Villa forwards to step up

Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard has voiced his frustrations after Sunday’s 0-0 draw against Leeds United, urging his forwards to step up.

The Villians were held to a goalless draw despite playing the majority of the game with an extra man after the hosts saw Luis Sinisterra sent off at Elland Road.

Gerrard admitted that his forwards need to step up and start performing to a better level after a disappointing start to the campaign.

Speaking to the Express and Star, Gerrard voiced his frustrations from the game at Elland Road, one which he believed Villa should have taken all three points from.

“When you concede goals you challenge your defenders. It is only fair I do the same to those in the front half of the pitch. We need our big players to step up,” he said.

“We played well today. We knew it was going to be tough. A point before the game would have been OK. It is a tough place. But how the game panned out, it is not enough. The game was there for us. One or two of our players might not sleep as much as they should have done tonight.

“The sending off was helpful. After that, we have to go and take the game.”

Aston Villa

Poor.

Overall Villa were poor on Sunday afternoon and should have taken advantage of Leeds being a man down, taking all three points back to Villa Park with them.

It’s clear that the Villains have a problem in their forward ranks, with their main forwards all misfiring on too many occasions, something needs to change.

Whether that’s making a move in the January transfer window remains to be seen, but Villa needs their strikers to start finding form sooner rather than later.

It’s frustrating, to say the least, Villa are creating the chances to score, however, they seem inept at being able to put the game away and this ultimately comes down to the forwards in the side.

Watkins’ form is worrying and Danny Ings has been playing nowhere near the levels he was at whilst at Southampton and with the two out of form it leaves Villa with few other options up.
