Aston Villa transfers: Journalist shares update on Luis Suarez link and Cameron Archer situation
Aston Villa are not interested in signing Luis Suarez, as per journalist Ashley Preece.
Suarez returned to Club Nacional after departing Atletico Madrid as a free agent. However, Suarez will leave as the Uruguayan Championship is now over.
Villa have been frequently linked with a move for Suarez, mainly due to his previous connection with Steven Gerrard, as per Birmingham Mail (20 September), but Preece has quashed those rumours.
The Birmingham Mail journalist said in a Q/A session (23 September) that “nothing in those” in the Suarez rumour.
He also suggested that young striker Cameron Archer needs to be playing regularly and it will be interesting to see if he is loaned out in January.
“Things are looking a little better after the last two results but more needed in the weeks to come. Suarez; nothing in those. It will be interesting to see if Archer will be loaned out in January… he needs to be playing,” said Preece.
Curious cases
The link with Suarez is purely due to his previous connection with Gerrard, which made little sense.
The former Barcelona and Liverpool striker is a legend in his own right, but he is at the fag end of his career.
Bringing him to Villa now doesn’t make any sense. Gerrard should think of promoting Archer more if he is indeed looking to add quality to his striker department.
The situation of Archer is really frustrating. The 20-year-old is a promising young talent, but his progress has been hampered by a lack of opportunities.
Gerrard probably doesn’t want to disturb the harmony by selecting him ahead of Danny Ings and Ollie Watkins, but he is the boss, and he needs to make tough calls if necessary.
A loan move in January could be ideal for the youngster, but Gerrard could still keep him in case anyone gets injured. Ings will enter the final year of his contract next season, so the club need to add a quality striker to fill his void.
