Aston Villa confirm knee ligament injury for Boubacar Kamara

Aston Villa have confirmed that Boubacar Kamara has suffered a knee ligament injury and has begun rehabilitation already.

The France midfielder has been an ever-present in Steven Gerrard’s midfield so far this season in the Premier League, but was forced off before half-time during the win over Southampton in the last game.

The manager confirmed he was worried and the player was withdrawn from international selection after the problem, and the club have now confirmed ligament damage on their official website.

“Aston Villa can confirm Boubacar Kamara suffered a knee ligament injury during last Friday’s victory over Southampton,” they said in a statement [23 September].

“The midfielder sustained the damage during the first half of our encounter with Saints and was replaced by Douglas Luiz shortly before half-time.

“As a result of the injury, Kamara was forced to withdraw from the French national squad for this round of UEFA Nations League fixtures and has begun a rehabilitation programme.”

Blow

Once again victory comes at a price as Villa are now likely to be without a key member of the starting lineup for a period of time, denting their bid for momentum.

After the previous win this season over Everton it was Diego Carlos who suffered an injury, being ruled out for the season with a ruptured achilles.

Now Kamara, who has settled into life excellently in England, is likely to miss a period of games during a period where fixtures will come thick and fast before the World Cup.

It provides an opportunity for Douglas Luiz to show his importance to the side, while deadline day signing Leander Dendoncker and outcasts Marvelous Nakamba and Morgan Sanson get a chance to show Gerrard they’re capable of being part of the squad.

Kamara’s absence in the holding role will be a huge blow and the team must find a way to cope without him and look to build momentum when they face Leeds next in the Premier League.
