‘About time’ – Aston Villa ace John McGinn reacts as he scores for Scotland
John McGinn opened the scoring for Scotland against Ukraine on Wednesday night and the Aston Villa captain took to social media to share his reaction after the game.
McGinn put in a man-of-the-match display for his national side at Hampden Park, thriving in a more advanced position in Steve Clarke’s side.
The newly-named Aston Villa captain has struggled for form in the Premier League, but will hope to kick on and build momentum from his Scotland form upon his return to Villa Park.
McGinn’s relief was clear to see on social media, with the 27-year-old pleased to finally end his scoring drought this season.
McGinn’s post on Twitter simply read: “About time”.
A pressure off his shoulders
McGinn will be mightily pleased to find the back of the net after a tough few weeks with Aston Villa.
He was deployed in a more advanced role by Clarke and looked back to his best, making late runs into the box and creating a number of chances for his Scotland teammates. Gerrard was surely watching, and may want to experiment with McGinn further up the pitch himself.
With pressure mounting over his role as captain and his Aston Villa performances this season, breaking his scoring duck could be exactly the kind of confidence boost that McGinn needed to kick on when the Premier League returns.
Villa headed into the international break in good spirits after their 1-0 win v Southampton, and McGinn built on that momentum during his international duties. Hopefully when the squad returns for their trip to Elland Road in October, McGinn will be one of a handful of players flowing with confidence.
