Aston Villa rank as one of the worst value for money teams in Premier League after damming financial study

CIES Football Observatory, the Swiss-based international centre for sports studies has ranked Aston Villa as the second-highest overspenders among English clubs.

The Swiss-based international centre for sports studies developed a statistical model designed to determine the monetary success of signings.

The statistical model uses data on the estimated value of a player before they join the club and calculates whether the team paid over the odds or under the value for their talents.

Aston Villa

From July 2012 until the end of last year Aston Villa managed to rack up the second-highest overspend among English clubs with a total of 149million euros (£130m) during the period.

Villa were only second to notorious overspenders Manchester United, who gave out a ridiculous 238m euros over the same period of time.

The Villans were free-spending crazy this summer but the study does note that dealings from the last transfer window were not taken into account, making the Villa statistics even more worrying.

Variables.

CIES revealed they take a certain number of factors into account when calculating their results, to make sure they get them absolutely spot on.

These include the overall experience of the player signed (minutes played), age, contract remaining at the selling club and whether their playing time has increased or slowed down in the last 12 months.

Other variables are also considered when making the results, these include, goals scored of 24 months in respect of the level of the league, goals assisted over a 12-month period, passing accuracy per minute and successful dribbles.

It also takes into account inflation and deflation by accessing economic levels during the time of the deal and the 100 largest transfers made over the last four windows.

Nevertheless, with all those numbers and variables taken in it’s still shocking to see Aston Villa’s name amongst some of Europe’s top clubs with relatively nothing to show for themselves.
