Aston Villa win v Southampton bores Jeff Stelling in Twitter claim

Aston Villa picked up their second win of the season on Friday night as they edged a cagey affair at home to Southampton 1-0.

Jacob Ramsey scored the only goal of the game just a few minutes before half-time in a game which saw just four shots on target and 26 fouls in total.

The stop-start nature of the game did not impress Sky Sports presenter Jeff Stelling who took to Twitter to make his thoughts on the live televised game.

“Villa v Southampton must be up there with the worst ever PL games.,” Stelling said as he watched Steven Gerrard’s side pull clear of the drop zone.

All seven of Aston Villa’s points in the Premier League this season have come at home which now draws the Villans level with the Saints in the league table.

Ramsey’s strike was only Villa’s sixth in the league this season with two of those coming in the other win at home to Everton.

A win is fantastic in a game that really needed it but Gerrard and his troops can’t now relax because there is still a big worry that needs to be addressed.

Aston Villa have lost all three away games in the Premier League this season at Bournemouth, Crystal Palace and Arsenal respectively and it cannot continue.

Aston Villa

Sure, there was a win at Bolton in the League Cup and the Gunners are flying at the start of the campaign so you could give them a bye on that one but Bournemouth, in particular, should have been dispatched.

Villa Park will need to be a fortress for Gerrard if it does but even that might not be enough to keep them out of a relegation battle if the performances don’t drastically improve.

The home draw against Manchester City was a very positive result but it only registered one point on the board and it will take more than that to keep their heads above water.

In other Aston Villa news, for England’s Under-21 squad, Ramsey has been called up once again but another young Lion has missed out.
