Dan Plumley: Aston Villa may have chased short-term cheque with Kaiyun Sports deal
We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Aston Villa…
Dan Plumley has shared that Aston Villa may be primarily chasing the cheque when it comes to their new partnership with Kaiyun Sports.
The Villans confirmed their deal with the Asian bookmaker to become their main sleeve sponsor in the Premier League and other competitions this season.
Plumley admitted the club may not have thought about the optics as Philippe Auclair shared that Kaiyun Sports were untraceable and possibly even “fake.”
“It’s another example of clubs chasing the cheque,” he exclusively told Villa News.
“I’m convinced that is going on, there is the need the generate more and more money from whatever source you can and clubs often kind of look at the number that is being branded around by whatever company it is.
“You run the risk of things like that happening. We praised them the other week for partnering with a local firm linked to advertising, and that looked really great, but then this deal doesn’t look as great.
“For me, it comes back to chasing the short-term cheque rather than thinking through the optics and fall through that could ensue.”

Only time will tell if this partnership proves to be fruitful for both parties.
Aston Villa will also be on the lookout for another main sponsor as their deal with Cazoo ran into financial difficulty, so all eyes will be on what comes next.
There is the obvious clamour for betting companies to be banned from all advertising when it comes to football clubs, but yet another has now been signed.
It looks as though that ban is not close afterall.
