Darren Bent claims Steven Gerrard could be sacked within four games at Aston Villa
Steven Gerrard could be four games away from the sack at Aston Villa after his poor start to the season, according to former striker Darren Bent.
Villa have lost four of their opening six games, with a win over Everton and a draw against Manchester City most recently their only positive results so far.
But with games against Leicester, Southampton, Leeds and Nottingham Forest coming up, Bent told talkSPORT [5 September] that if he doesn’t win at least two of those four games then he could be sacked.
“I never really though that he’d get the sack regardless [of the result vs Man City],” he said. “Unless they got beat 9-0 or something crazy like that.
“When you look at Leicester, Southampton, Leeds, Nottingham Forest next, they’re the games that could get him the sack. So he needs to be getting at least two wins out of that four.”
Facts
Gerrard isn’t under pressure because he’s lost games to the likes of Arsenal, Manchester City or Liverpool, it’s because he isn’t winning the games he’s supposed to.
The clubs in and around Villa in the league table are games that Villa expect to win because of the money they’ve spent and the quality of the squad they have.
They’ve been underperforming massively in recent months, going back to last season, but there is enough quality and ability in this side to turn it around and they showed that in the draw against City that they’re capable of hurting teams.
Gerrard has been successful with Rangers and while Scotland and England are two completely different kettles of fish, he has the potential as a coach to fix this given the time.
But time is precious and if he doesn’t get a couple of wins in the next four games then it will give the board a big decision to make as they approach the first third of the season being completed by that point.
