Aston Villa agree deal to sign Southampton defender Jan Bednarek on loan – David Ornstein

Aston Villa reportedly have a deal in place to sign Southampton defender Bednarek on loan on transfer deadline day.

According to The Athletic journalist David Ornstein on 1 September, West Ham were close to an agreement, but the defender snubbed a move to the London Stadium for Villa Park.

He will undergo a medical before finalising his move to join Steven Gerrard’s side until the end of the season.

Aston Villa

Good deal?

Villa desperately needed a midfielder and it’s good to see them addressing that glaring issue on their side on the final day of the transfer market.

The fact that he was coveted by other Premier League sides as well tells you that he’s quality and will undoubtedly add value to this side.

He is a strong, ball-playing defender who will make players around him better and bring some organisation into the back line.

Hopefully, his arrival is coupled with the wiping out of individual errors at the back as those have cost Villa points time and again.

This pursuit began two weeks ago when the Birmingham club realised how severe Diego Carlos’ injury was.

Now that Gerrard has got his man, there are no more excuses left and he’s quickly got to turn things around or it will be his future he will have to worry about.

Nobody expects a result against Manchester City, but they at least need a change in attitude and need to play like a team rather than a group of individuals.

In other Aston Villa news, manager Steven Gerrard is very keen to bring Liverpool defender Joe Gomez to the club.
