Stan Collymore blasts Christian Purslow over Steven Gerrard appointment at Aston Villa

Stan Collymore has blasted Christian Purslow for appointing his “friend” Steven Gerrard based on his name, after Aston Villa lost to West Ham.

The Villans slipped to a third defeat in four Premier League games this season as the Hammers grabbed a 1-0 win at Villa Park on Sunday afternoon.

That made it just three wins in 15 league games for Gerrard and Collymore went in on the boss and CEO Purslow for his “vanity pick” rather than going for the best candidate available in a rant on his personal Twitter account.

“SG under pressure. Will be interesting to see if he gets same scrutiny as other managers amongst friends in media who’ve been suspiciously absent in analysis thus far,” he said.

“If he does fail then Purslow should go. Ignored a plethora of quality coaches for his own vanity pick.”

Bomb

People won’t like what Collymore is saying because Gerrard is well liked at the club and he started off his tenure quite well with an aura and ruthlessness about him.

However that’s all gone left in recent months and Villa are now under pressure to turn it around or face admitting that they made a big mistake in hiring the Liverpool legend.

Aston Villa

What he did at Rangers during his seasons there was mightily impressive no doubt, but the likes of Graham Potter could’ve been approached having already proven themselves in the Premier League and that’s what Collymore is saying should have happened.

It’s hard to argue with it too, because Gerrard seemingly got a crack at the big time based on his name and reputation plus a good spell in Scotland which would never normally be enough for anyone else.

Once ex players start to turn on the manager it’s usually a long road back and if performances don’t change soon, then Gerrard could find himself out of a job before the World Cup.
