Paul Merson predicts defeat for Aston Villa v Arsenal

Paul Merson has predicted another defeat for Aston Villa when they face Arsenal in the Premier League fixture on Wednesday (30 August).

The Villans are going through a tough start to their new campaign where they’ve only managed to win one out of their four matches played so far.

Merson, in a column on Sportskeeda, stated that the Gunners are likely to be too strong for the visiting team.

“I think Arsenal will win this,” he said.

“But it’ll be a slightly harder game than what they would expect. Aston Villa are really struggling at the moment and have Manchester City to come after this one, so Steven Gerrard will definitely be feeling the pressure.

“There’s a lot going wrong with his team at the moment and he doesn’t know his best XI, which is a worrying sign if you’re a Villa fan.”

Concerning

Villa entered the campaign hoping that things would improve compared to the previous season, especially after a full pre-season under Gerrard who joined the club midway through last season.

However, after just four matches in the league competition, things are already looking extremely bad as the side have only managed to win once and have just three points, currently placed in the 15th position in the table.

If Merson’s words are to be believed, it will make things even more difficult for the Villans and especially for Gerrard if the results go against them.

Looking at historical meetings does not give too much hope for the club supporters as Villa have only managed to win 11 in 54 fixtures between the sides which included 29 defeats and 14 draws.

The side were on the receiving end in both meetings last season where the Gunners came out on top with score of 1-0 and 3-1 [Transfermarkt].

In other Aston Villa news, the club are scouting in Portugal and Spain for a new defender according to a report
