Ally McCoist issues staunch defence of Steven Gerrard at Aston Villa

Ally McCoist has asked for Aston Villa to be more patient with Steven Gerrard amid their recent run of form.

The Villans suffered yet another Premier League defeat against West Ham on Sunday and the pressure has started mounting on the former Liverpool captain.

Even though a win could’ve taken Villa to 7th, calls have been growing for him to be sacked by the club.

McCoist told talkSPORT: “They win that game they could be seventh.

“I understand the frustration of a lot of Villa fans. If you’re asking for a knee jerk reaction, absolutely not.

“Let’s all calm down. Another 4/5/6 games to go and let’s see how things go.

“You look at the team. I like the look of the team. They’ve got some great players, Coutinho, Watkins, Ings, McGinn is a good player. They’re maybe just not firing yet.

“I think they’ll be alright, I really, really do.

“When I say I think they’ll be alright I think they’ll be mid table, I don’t see them certainly top six, or even top eighth.

“They might get eighth but I think that’s where Villa are. I don’t see a massive improvement in Villa but I don’t think they’ll struggle this year.

“I understand football fans as well as anybody. I just think at this early stage, there should be a little bit of understanding and people should be time.”

Facts

Sacking Gerrard right now will not do anything as many of the players are currently at the club because of his influence.

Results haven’t been good but he has managed to turn things around in the past and we back him to do so again.

Should they sign a good central midfielder and possibly another attacker, he can then look to get a few wins on the board and steady the ship.

At Rangers, Gerrard’s side played some eye-catching football and he can certainly replicate the same thing here in Birmimgham.

He’s got better players here and does seem to have control over the dressing room – who are willing to adapt and make the changes needed to succeed.

It remains to be seen how the Villa boss manages to turn things around but we’re sure to see a response in the coming days from him.

In other Aston Villa news, manager Steven Gerrard is very keen to bring Liverpool defender Joe Gomez to the club.
