Steven Gerrard confirms Aston Villa keen to sign defender before close of transfer window

Steven Gerrard has confirmed that Aston Villa are looking to sign players to bolster their defensive unit for the remainder of the season.

The Villans have suffered a major blow in the early part of the campaign with newly-signed defender Diego Carlos being ruled out for at least six months after rupturing his Achilles tendon [Sky Sports].

Gerrard was quoted by Sky Sports on Friday [26 August] where he said that the club are definitely looking to bring players in to strengthen their defensive line.

“Defensively, we had a huge setback in recent weeks,” he said.

“We went into the market and made an addition who we thought was going to help us an awful lot and strengthen that area of our team.

“It was taken away, so we continue to work and analyse if there’s anyone who can come in and help us. Until that happens, we work with what we’ve got to try and improve every single day.

“Hopefully by doing that, putting in the minutes and coaching on the training ground, the mistakes or goals that we’re conceding will dry up.”

Big days ahead

Aston Villa entered the season with a lot of optimism, hoping that the first full season under Steven Gerrard would prove to be a bigger hit than the last season where the team finished outside the top 10.

However, things have not been the way many expected them to be as the Villans have already suffered two defeats in the first three matches and have only registered three points.

To make things worse, big-name signing Carlos has been ruled out for the majority of the campaign which means that the club are now in a desperate estate to sign players who can help the side in getting things back on track as soon as possible.

This will be also a tough test for Gerrard who is now coming under pressure with a series of poor results from the side under his management and if Villa lose against West Ham on Sunday while playing at home, things will only go from bad to worse for the former Rangers boss.

In other Aston Villa news, Hutton is delighted to see his former side take the Carabao Cup seriously after a big 4-1 win away at Bolton Wanderers in midweek.
