Gabby Agbonlahor: Steven Gerrard must be judged after one full season at Aston Villa

Gabby Agbonlahor believes that it’s too early to judge Steven Gerrard’s time as the manager of Aston Villa.

The Villans have lost two and won one of three Premier League fixtures this season and sit mid-table.

The former Villa forward believes that teams have started worse off than Villa and their managers do not seem to be under any pressure.

Speaking on talkSPORT, he said, “First of all, three wins in 14, Steven Gerrard will know that the players are better than that.

“Bournemouth, they’ve just come up, was always going to be a tough game. Newly promoted side as we saw with Fulham against Liverpool.

“They controlled the game against Everton and got the win. Crystal Palace away is one of the toughest grounds to go to.

“David Moyes, zero goals, zero points. Are we hearing about David Moyes being under pressure?

“This season you cannot be going by two or three games. Give the manager seven or eight games and see where they are.

“Steven Gerrard’s built a squad of players. Give him a chance. Give him a season.”

Fair enough

Gerrard is getting unnecessary slack because he’s a reputed name in football.

Had he been one of the unheard of foreign managers, surely there wouldn’t be a campaign of this sort against him.

Sure, the results haven’t been great but the players must take responsibility for that as well.

Those calling for Gerrard’s sacking are naive, to say the least and we need to see a few more months before he gets his mark across on this side.

We all know that once players buy into his system, they automatically become an attractive side to watch.

If he managed to do that with Rangers there’s no reason why he can’t replicate it at Villa Park.

Hopefully, he gets the signings he needs this summer and we can see them climbing up the table slowly but surely.

In other Aston Villa news, manager Steven Gerrard is very keen to bring Liverpool defender Joe Gomez to the club.
