Alan Hutton: Tyrone Mings shouldn’t be reconsidered for Aston Villa leadership role

We’re delighted to welcome former Aston Villa full-back Alan Hutton as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Villa Park

Alan Hutton believes Tyrone Mings shouldn’t be considered for the Aston Villa vice-captaincy after Diego Carlos’ injury blow against Everton.

The Brazilian was named joint vice-captain alongside Emi Martinez but is set to be out for six months after rupturing his Achilles tendon according to Sky Sports (15 August).

Hutton feels that after being stripped of the captaincy, it’s unlikely that Mings will be reconsidered for a leadership role by Steven Gerrard.

“I don’t think that will happen now if I’m totally honest,Hutton told Villa News.

“If you look at the reshuffle of John McGinn being captain and Carlos being made vice-captain, Mings wasn’t even mentioned in that despite being the captain himself.

“For whatever reason Steven Gerrard must not see Mings in that way and he clearly wants a whole reshuffle now.

“I don’t see Mings coming back into the reckoning for it now and I think they’ve got enough.

“When you start talking about vice-captains and different things, you don’t need too many players to be within that role.

“Your main captain is on the pitch and then there is maybe a club captain which is fine.

“I don’t see any reason to name anybody else.”

Gerrard is now on the lookout for additional cover for Carlos, with The Athletic reporting on 19 August, that the club have made an approach for Southampton centre-back Jan Bednarek.

Furthermore, Chelsea’s 23-year-old defender is also a target for Gerrard as reported by ESPN’s live transfer blog on 19 August.

After Villa’s 3-1 defeat to Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, it is abundantly clear that defensive reinforcements are a must for Gerrard at present.
