Steven Gerrard record at Aston Villa now worse than Gary Neville’s at Valencia
Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard has come under scrutiny after his team lost to Patrick Vieira’s Crystal Palace 3-1 on Saturday, 20 August.
The 42-year-old has had a mixed start to life at Aston Villa failing to really establish a style of play or a set starting XI since joining the club in 2021.
However, a worrying statistic regarding his Aston Villa tenure has painted a new light on the job he is doing at Villa Park and Villa fans should start to worry if this continues.
Life under Gerrard started very brightly, with four wins out of his first six games and an impressive performance against Manchester United in January 2022 signified the club may be going in the right direction.
However, with his defeat to the Seagulls being his 31st match in charge of the club, there seems to be little progress made and a lack of identity within the club.
Gerrard, who had previously been tipped with a run at the Liverpool job one day, has recorded a disappointing rate of 1.23 points per game at Villa Park and serious questions marks around his tenure are starting to rise.
The former Liverpool midfielder has only won 35% of his matches as Villa boss, a huge change from his 64% winning percentage as Rangers boss.
His 35% winning percentage at Villa Park is shockingly the same winning percentage that Gary Neville had during his time as Valencia manager, a managerial stint that he was ruthlessly ridiculed for, via Lewis Steele of the Daily Mail.
The defeat to Palace is Villa’s second defeat of their season and the fact that they have only won three games in their last 14 is a statistic that he needs to address quickly before his job comes under serious pressure.
In other Aston Villa news, the club have agreed a £25m deal for Watford’s Ismaila Sarr.
