Alan Hutton: Aston Villa must keep playing Philippe Coutinho despite his form

We’re delighted to welcome former Aston Villa full-back Alan Hutton as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Villa Park

Alan Hutton has insisted that Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard should continue to play Philippe Coutinho despite the Brazilian’s indifferent form at present.

The 30-year-old attacking midfielder has failed to register a goal or an assist for Villa so far this season and has struggled to make an impact for Gerrard’s side.

However, Hutton believes that the Villa boss must continue to play Coutinho in order for the Brazilian to rediscover his form.

“Gerrard has to keep playing him as you don’t become a bad player overnight,” Hutton told Villa News.

“He came in last season and it did take him a little bit of time to get up to speed.”

“I thought him going through a full pre-season would mean we all see the best of Philippe straight away.

“That’s what we were all expecting and that’s what brings the pressure. He’s a big-time player who is used to pressure situations and it’s just about him getting into his groove and finding that form and being consistent.

“He has got competition with Emi Buendia breathing down his neck and he will be used to that.

“I think you just have to stick by him and I think Gerrard will give him a chance and he will come good.”

The Brazilian will be looking to open his account for the 2022/23 season as the Villans travel to Selhurst Park to take on Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Futbol Total reported (12 August, via Twitter) that Villa are eying a move for Real Betis attacking midfielder Nabil Fekir and that could mean more competition for the Brazilian.

Gerrard’s side are looking to make it two wins in a row after getting their Premier League campaign up and running with a win over Frank Lampard’s Everton.
