Alan Hutton Exclusive: Diego Carlos injury is not season-defining for Aston Villa
We’re delighted to welcome former Aston Villa full-back Alan Hutton as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Villa Park…
Alan Hutton doesn’t think that Diego Carlos’ injury is season-defining for Steven Gerrard and Aston Villa but does feel the club need to add another defender to their ranks.
Sky Sports suggested on 15 August that the 29-year-old could be out for six months after rupturing his Achilles tendon in Villa’s 2-1 Premier League win over Everton.
However, Hutton believes that his injury isn’t season-defining for Villa, despite his big-money summer transfer from Sevilla.

“Whether Carlos’ injury is a season-defining one I’m not so sure because we’re only at the start,” Hutton told Villa News.
“Of course, it’s a huge blow because he brought in to be that rock at the back and play alongside another centre-back.
“It’s really disappointing for him because he did get off to a good start and he looked really solid.
“The big question now is whether Gerrard will go and bring somebody in because he obviously wasn’t happy with what he had otherwise he wouldn’t have signed Carlos.
“When you look down the line, is it going to be Ezri Konsa and Tyrone Mings or is Kortney Hause going to come back?
“I think if they really want to go and hit the next level they will need to go and bring somebody else into the club.
“It’s a real shame for him to get injured so early on into his Villa career.”

Carlos was a key part of Gerrard’s plans for the 2022/23 campaign and it will be intriguing to see if the club add to their defensive ranks.
The Guardian reported on Monday 15 August, that the club are back in the market for a central defender after the injury to the Brazilian.
Whether they spent a large transfer fee remains to be seen.
