Steven Gerrard wants Douglas Luiz to stay at Aston Villa, contract talks ongoing – report

Steven Gerrard wants Douglas Luiz to stay at Aston Villa, as per Birmingham Live journalist Ashley Preece.

While answering in a Q&A session for Birmingham Live (2 August), Preece suggested that “conversations ongoing” at the moment, as Gerrard sees him as a big part of his plans.

Luiz has less than 12 months left on his present contract, and he has been linked with a move to AC Milan.

Goal reported on 4 July that Milan are in talks to sign the Villa midfielder, but they have failed to meet the player’s valuation.

New deal?

The Telegraph reported on 29 July that Villa are hopeful that an agreement can be reached.

Villa signed him from Manchester City back in 2019 for a fee of around £15 million. Since then, he has been a reliable player for the club, managing over 110 appearances.

While confusion remains about Luiz’s best position, there’s no doubt about his qualities.

The 24-year-old was targeted by Newcastle United and Villa rejected an offer of £30m for him.

Having missed out on signing Kalvin Phillips and Yves Bissouma, the Midlands club should be doing everything to keep Luiz at the club.

Villa have bolstered their midfield region this summer by adding Boubacar Kamara from Marseille on a free transfer. It will be really exciting to watch the pair of Kamara and Luiz in action.

Luiz probably feels more comfortable at the club with more South American players around – Philippe Coutinho, Emiliano Martínez and Diego Carlos.

He is an integral part of the club’s long-term plans, and hopefully, a deal can be agreed shortly.

In other Aston Villa news, manager Steven Gerrard is very keen to bring Liverpool defender Joe Gomez to the club.
