Morgan Sanson could be in for Aston Villa career renaissance – report

Aston Villa could be set to give French midfielder Morgan Sanson a chance to revive his Villa Park career, according to the Birmingham Mail.

Sanson arrived at Villa from beleaguered Ligue 1 giants Marseille in January 2021 but has suffered chronic fitness issues ever since arriving at B6.

He seemed to fall out of favour with Steven Gerrard even when fit towards the end of last season, but the Birmingham Mail revealed in a Q&A on Tuesday morning (26 July) that Sanson will be given a second chance.

The report stated that Sanson is still “very much in Gerrard’s plans” after his dazzling pre-season form and predicted he will be given a run of games next season.

Sanson has so far cost Villa just under £1million per Premier League appearance after making 19 league outings since his £15million move from France.

Welcome move on the surface

It is something of a cliché, but Sanson’s strong summer showings have come as both a blessing and a curse.

While it is always good that players are bouncing back from injuries with strong form, it has thrown a spanner in the works of their summer plans.

Villa are known to be chasing a midfielder this summer, with links to the likes of Conor Gallagher mooted, but they already have a bloated midfield.

Gerrard already has to pick between Sanson, Jacob Ramsey, John McGinn and Douglas Luiz for the more advanced midfield role and the Frenchman’s resurgence is only adding to his headache.

However, it can be viewed a different way by saying that now that Sanson is playing so well, Villa do not need a midfielder.

That is true and – prepare for another cliché – given that he has featured so little since arriving, he will be like a new signing for Villa.

Sanson has not put a foot wrong on the pitch for Villa so he deserves this second chance.
