Steven Gerrard wants to sign another midfielder for Aston Villa – report

Steven Gerrard wants Aston Villa to sign another midfielder this summer, despite the arrival of Boubacar Kamara earlier in the transfer window.

That’s according to the Express and Star [July 20], who claim that three midfielders face an uncertain future at Villa Park before the window closes with their contract situations and standing in the squad meaning the club have a decision to make.

Morgan Sanson has struggled to adapt to English football and made just 20 appearances in his two seasons at the club so far, while Douglas Luiz and Carney Chukwuemeka are both into the final year of their contracts.

That uncertainty means Gerrard wants to add one more body to strengthen the middle of the park, although there is no priority target named.

Villa have already signed five players this summer with the arrivals of Kamara, Diego Carlos, Philippe Coutinho, Robin Olsen and Lustwig Augustinsson already confirmed.

Depth

Villa have got excellent depth across their squad so far, but exits would see that level of quality dip in midfield this summer.

Without the four previously mentioned players they still have John McGinn, Jacob Ramsey and Tim Iroegbunam as options but Gerrard would like a bit more quality.

There have been some links to Chelsea ace Conor Gallagher although it seems more likely that he will stay put at Stamford Bridge this summer now, while Ross Barkley was also offered to the club.

But to bring in quality will come at a price and the club may not have much left in their budget after their expenditure already exceeded £50m.

That means sales could be needed first before they are able to bring anyone else in, so it could be a deal that happens later in the window rather than before the Premier League season begins in two-and-a-half weeks.
