Aston Villa offered chance to sign Ross Barkley – report

Aston Villa have been offered the chance to re-sign Ross Barkley from Chelsea this summer, according to a report by The Mirror.

Barkley spent the 2020/21 season on loan at Villa Park under Dean Smith, but struggled to make a starting spot his own after a hamstring injury early on and the club didn’t take up their option to make his signing permanent at the end of the season.

He then stayed at Chelsea for the 2021/22 season after failing to secure a move away, making just six Premier League appearances across the season.

Now according to a report by The Mirror (July 18), the Blues are looking to offload the former Everton academy star and have offered him out to clubs including Aston Villa and the Toffees.

A deal is acknowledged as being unlikely due to Steven Gerrard’s preferred 4-3-3 formation and the abundance of options he currently has in central midfield.

No thanks

Once upon a time Barkley was regarded as the brightest talent in the country, but it never really clicked for him and he’s ended up becoming somewhat wasted talent.

A big move to Chelsea never worked out for him at all and he now finds himself in a position where he’s desperate to find a club that will take a chance on him to resurrect his career.

Aston Villa

That club shouldn’t be Aston Villa though. We gave him an opportunity to do that two years ago, when the squad was much weaker and the aims of the club were lower than they are today and he wasn’t able to take it.

So to assume he can do that now would just be craziness and it’s not something the club should even be looking at.

His wages are high, he’s not as good as current options and he would be blocking a pathway for some of the young talents like Carney Chukwuemeka and Tim Iroegbunam. There’s no scenario where it’s a good deal.

In other Aston Villa news, the club have already shown why they must keep Carney Chukwuemeka this season
