Alan Hutton insists it was the right time for Lovre Kalinic to leave Aston Villa

We’re delighted to welcome former Scotland defender Alan Hutton as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Aston Villa...

Alan Hutton believes that now was the right time for Lovre Kalinic to be moved on by Aston Villa after over three years at the club.

The former Villa hero believes that his move to Villa has not worked out and that Steven Gerrard will want to move deadwood out of the squad.

Kalinic managed just eight appearances in a Villa shirt, with his final outing coming less than two months after he arrived and Hutton believes the timing was right for him to finally go.

“He’s been there a long time now and it has not worked out, so it was time for him to go,” he exclusively told Villa News.

If he wants to get his own guys in, he needs to clear the decks and I think that’s what he’s going for right now with the likes of Morgan Sanson, Douglas Luiz possibly.

He only started last year, so they have to move them on. He has to free up space, so this is a major part of the rebuild for the club.”

Villa’s squad certainly needs to have the fat trimmed and Kalinic was certainly a major part of that.

Other members that could do with being moved on are Morgan Sanson, Anwar El Ghazi, Frederic Guilbert, Kortney Hause and arguably Keinan Davis.

While none of them are bad players, far from it in most cases, they are simply not going to play and are only clogging up the squad.

There are young players that could take all of their places, which would also free up wages for the few senior recruits Villa need.

Kalinic was swiftly joined out the door by Trezeguet and surely others will not be far behind.

In other Aston Villa news, women’s star Ruesha Littlejohn has signed a new one-year contract.
