Aston Villa have not made an approach for Liverpool defender Joe Gomez – Rob Dorsett

Aston Villa have not made an approach for Liverpool and England defender Joe Gomez, according to Rob Dorsett.

Villa had previously been credited with an interest in Gomez and had been quoted a fee of £30million according to the Daily Express.

However, Sky Sports journalist Dorsett has shared that Villa have not made an approach and the 25-year-old is now in talks over a new contract at Anfield.

Gomez has been blighted by injuries in recent years, limiting him to just 15 Premier League appearances across the last two seasons.

Villa have already added to their defensive ranks by signing Diego Carlos from Sevilla last month, but currently have Ezri Konsa and Kortney Hause out with injuries.

Villa simply did not need him anyway

The news should come as a relief to Villa fans as signing Gomez for the reported fee would have been a mystifying decision.

Yes, Gomez is a very talented defender but £30million would make him the most expensive defender in the history of the club.

Villa are already well-stocked in the centre of defence, with each player having a defined role that they are comfortable with.

Carlos, Konsa and Tyrone Mings are the first-choice, Calum Chambers and Hause are the backups with Josh Feeney and Lamare Bogarde being youngsters to fall back on.

Villa do not need another first-choice player in that area and both backups are capable defenders, meaning Gomez would not fit into the structure.

Instead, Villa can look to invest the money that would have gone on Gomez into other areas of the pitch that need more urgent attention.

Their main concerns should be around depth as the starting line-up is looking stacked with their summer business so far.

Villa’s need for a backup left-back has decreased with Ashley Young signing his new contract, but a midfielder and striker could be addressed later in the summer.

In other Aston Villa news, the club has a dilemma to address as Keinan Davis and Cameron Archer compete for game time.
