Aston Villa Women star Ramona Petzelberger holds talks with Spurs

Aston Villa Women could be set to lose one of their stars as Ramona Petzelberger is in talks with Tottenham, according to Emma Sanders.

The skilful German midfielder joined Villa following their promotion to the Women’s Super League in 2020 and has enjoyed a mixed spell in the Midlands.

However, BBC reporter Sanders now reports that Petzelberger could be set for a move to London after holding talks with Spurs at the start of this summer.

In an update posted on Twitter, Sanders said that Spurs were “among the clubs” who have spoken to Petzelberger ahead of a potential move away from Villa.

The 29-year-old midfielder made 19 appearances for Villa last season and was their joint-top goal scorer, netting three times.

Concerning for Villa

While Petzelberger is not a remarkable player, she is key to Villa and how they play.

Carla Ward is already operating on a small squad, but after players have been released or had loans expire, she now has just 13 senior players as well as youngsters.

One of those 13, captain Remi Allen, will also miss large parts of next season after injuring her Anterior Cruciate Ligament back in April.

It must be assumed that there is a plan in place to replace these players, but they have signed nobody and there are no rumours about incomings.

It is true that Villa as a club prefer to do business quietly, with Ward often leaving deals until late.

Last summer saw Villa sign Emily Gielnik, Ruesha Littlejohn and Gemma Davison on deadline day, with Rachel Corsie coming in on January deadline day.

However, Villa simply cannot afford to let anyone else leave the club until replacements are brought in.

Right now, the Lions cannot fill a matchday squad without using a string of talented but inexperienced academy players at their disposal.

After another season being the lowest scorers in the league, Villa already needed a major recruitment drive, but if Petzelberger leaves they will need to replace 10 senior players.

In other Aston Villa news, the club need to stop limiting John McGinn to get the most out of him.
