Aston Villa will not make move to sign Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – report

Aston Villa are not going to make a transfer move to sign Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain this summer, according to Phil McNulty.

Steven Gerrard had hoped that he could persuade his former club to sell the England international but there is now no interest from Villa’s side in a transfer.

McNulty, who is the chief football writer for the BBC, also reported, via his personal Twitter account, that there is similarly little interest in a move to sign Atletico Madrid striker Luis Suarez.

The Uruguayan is a former teammate of Gerrard’s and his contract at the Wanda Metropolitano is due to expire on 30 June which means he would be available on a free transfer.

But with Danny Ings and Ollie Watkins to lead the line, the Villans boss has moved away from a transfer for Suarez.

Good choice

Understandably, Gerrard might be very keen to exercise his connection sat Anfield to try and get himself a bargain or two in the transfer market but not every Liverpool player, past or present, should be heading to Villa Park.

Oxlade-Chamberlain in particular cannot be trusted to keep himself fit for more than five minutes and the last thing we need is a player on big wages spending the majority of his time on the treatment table.

Aston Villa

He does have a genuine quality that could help us on the pitch but paying however much we need to to get him would not be worth it whatsoever for that one game he’s able to play.

Suarez is famously a loose cannon too and he is probably over the hill already if we’re completely honest.

He may have been able to hack it in La Liga with the slow pace of games but the Premier League is far too intense for someone like him these days and he would struggle for us badly.

In other Aston Villa news, Watford are interested in not just one, but two of our strikers as they try to put together a team to earn promotion back to the Premier League.
