View: Steven Gerrard can rekindle flame of Luis Suarez if he signs for Aston Villa

Steven Gerrard appears adamant on improving his striker situation at Aston Villa and he could well reunite with one of his former teammates.

According to The Athletic, Atletico Madrid striker Luis Suarez is on the former England captain’s shortlist after the two played together for Liverpool during Gerrard’s playing days.

The 35-year-old left Anfield for Barcelona before switching to Atletico but his contract at the Wanda Metropolitano expires at the end of June.

No talks appear to have taken place yet though but if the boss really does want to add another striker to his armoury, then Suarez could be the man.

Gerrard will be keen to see if he can rekindle that flame that saw him light up the Premier League during his Liverpool days.

One aspect of his game that is often overlooked is the strength he has, especially when up against big central defenders who like to impose themselves on their opponent.

In this instance, it’s former Newcastle defender Fabricio Coloccini who is trying to out-muscle the Uruguayan but he kept his body between the Argentine and the ball to create himself a chance at goal.

Under such pressure, most strikers would hastily shoot with so much pressure behind them from a defender but Suarez isn’t just any other striker.

As Tim Krul came rushing out, the Uruguayan coolly waltzed around the Dutchman to open up a free shot at goal from just a few yards away to score one of the Premier League’s most memorable goals.

That kind of magic has long been lacking from his game in Spain but when you look at any clip from his time in England, that is still within him.

In this instance against West Brom, it looks like there is no way out of a tight situation but such is the genius of the man, he managed to not only nutmeg the defender, but then rifle an outside of the boot shot into the corner.

He could be a dud of a signing, but he could equally be a stroke of genius by Gerrard and Aston Villa will certainly be an exciting place to be if he does join the club.

In other Aston Villa news, there is another, much younger striker who the Villans are attempting to purchase but Leeds United are offering stern competition.
