Gabby Agbonlahor reacts as Matt Targett move from Aston Villa to Newcastle United is confirmed
Gabby Agbonlahor has led the tributes to Matt Targett after the left-back’s permanent move from Aston Villa to Newcastle United was confirmed.
Newcastle announced via their official Twitter account on Wednesday (8 June) that Targett, 26, has agreed a four-year deal at St James’ Park after he spent the second half of the 2021/22 season on loan there.
The now-former Aston Villa player took to Instagram after the move was sealed, saying that he “can’t wait” to start pre-season with the Magpies.
Agbonlahor replied to Targett’s post, saying: “Good luck mate, apart from against Villa.”
John Terry also commented, saying “good luck” to Targett.
Conor Hourihane, Anwar El Ghazi and Cameron Archer also sent their best wishes and congratulatoins to the left-back.

Good luck, Matt
It’s no shock that Targett’s left Villa Park.
Ever since Lucas Digne joined from Everton in January, it was always going to be the case that Targett would move on as he’s too good to be a second-choice left-back at Villa.
He did very well on loan at Newcastle last season.
The ex-Southampton full-back made 16 appearances for the Magpies and he ended up on the winning side in 10 of those outings.
Eddie Howe’s revival at St James’ Park was truly remarkable and Targett was a key player in a turnaround that left many critics completely baffled.
Targett will be a good long-term signing for them and Villa now have a bit of money in their bank to go out and continue strengthening Steven Gerrard’s squad.
In other Aston Villa news, it’s time for Archer to get his chance at Villa Park.
