Steven Gerrard excited by early Aston Villa work in transfer window

Steven Gerrard has admitted that he is “really happy” with where Aston Villa are amid a very busy transfer window ahead of next season.

The Lions have moved early in the summer window – securing the signings of Philippe Coutinho, Boubacar Kamara, and Diego Carlos already.

Whilst the Villans boss admits it is nice to get the drop on his rivals, he knows there is still a lot of work to be done.

“We have tried to get in while people are sleeping and try to make some big pieces of the jigsaw,” Gerrard told BT Sport via Birmingham Live. “We are really happy with where we are right now.”

He added: “It’s exciting moving forward but it is time to switch off for a few weeks.

“Of course, I will be on the phone doing what I need to do and I am really looking forward to a full pre-season and I am optimistic for next year.”

Bright future.

What a time it is to be an Aston Villa fan, honestly. You would have to go back a very long time to see this sort of optimism coursing through the club – it’s great.

Gerrard has come in and given the fans a sense of belief that one day soon they might be back where they belong, competing much higher up the table.

Admittedly, the team’s form did drop after the honeymoon period when he took over from Dean Smith in November but as he himself eludes to – a full preseason working with the squad that he has moulded himself over the summer will be hugely beneficial.

Everything about this transfer window only fuels that narrative. The Lions are signing players of European calibre.

The three signings they have already made show serious signs of intent for next season.

These are all players with serious quality and hopefully, they can take Villa to the next level.
