Richard Dunne tells Aston Villa to sign Emmanuel Dennis and James Tarkowski

Former Aston Villa defender Richard Dunne believes the club should be looking to sign Emmanuel Dennis and James Tarkowski this summer.

Villa have started work on bolstering their squad quickly this summer, confirming the permanent signings of Philippe Coutinho, Boubacar Kamara and Diego Carlos before the month of May came to an end.

But Dunne, speaking to Bet 365, believes the club still need a central midfielder and attacking option and named the two recently relegated aces as targets that could ‘push them up the league’.

“I’m sure clubs will start looking at Tarkowski from Burnley and Dennis from Watford now they have gone down,” he said.

“They would benefit a few teams in Villa’s area [of the table]. They need another attacking player to give them more options up top and another central midfielder.

“They aren’t crying out for someone in any position but they are looking for that next level of player to push them up the league, they have a decent strong squad.”

Depth

One thing that Gerrard seems to be keen on bolstering this summer is the depth and quality options that the club have available when they’re not at their strongest.

The way he’s going about it is by adding starting players to the squad, which in turn relegates the current starters to lesser roles but strengthens the squad greatly.

There have been some suggestions that Tarkowski is no longer a target, but with the future of Ollie Watkins in the air currently the signing of Dennis could be shrewd if reports are to be believed that he is only going to cost around £20m.

Both players would be excellent additions to the side however and fans would be happy to see either if not both arrive at Villa Park ahead of the new season.

It would take little out of the budget, greatly bolster the squad and only make the team stronger for next season.
