Aston Villa handed £10million boost in hunt to sign defender Diego Carlos – reports

Aston Villa have been handed a £10million boost in their pursuit of Sevilla defender Diego Carlos, according to reports by the Daily Mail.

As Steven Gerrard looks to bolster his defence, the Villans have been linked with a number of central defenders of late, including James Tarkowski, Sven Botman and Joe Gomez.

The Athletic reported that the Lions are “exploring the possibility” of a move for the centre-back in the summer transfer window but the cost of a move is a potential stumbling block.

However, with the La Liga outfit “resigned” to losing some of their key players over the summer as they look to “balance their books” during their uneasy financial situation – it is said that the Lions could get him for a cut-price.

The Villa Park outfit could potentially get the 29-year-old for £30million instead of the £40million rating placed on his head previously with him contracted to the Spanish club until 2024.

Fight.

Gerrard is absolutely desperate to bolster his ranks over the summer – his defence in particular.

The injury to Ezri Konsa that will see him out for well into next season has left Aston Villa quite vulnerable at the back with their quality options in central defence already quite scarce.

You can certainly expect Eddie Howe and Newcastle to be back in for the Brazilian after having several bids turned down for the powerhouse in January.

It might be difficult to prise the Sevilla man away from the lure of St James’ Park given the massive amounts of money they can now throw at clubs and players which means Gerrard will have some fight on his hands.

The Lions being linked with several defenders is good news in that case. Having several good options is huge because it means they won’t be forced into any panic buys should Carlos choose to go somewhere else.

In other Aston Villa news, Sky Sports report that Aston Villa are in talks with Burnley for defender James Tarkowski ahead of a move in the summer.
