Paul Merson: Kalvin Phillips is not too good for Aston Villa, it would be ‘Unbelievable’ move
Paul Merson has insisted that Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips is not too good to play for Aston Villa ahead of a potential summer transfer.
The Villans have been linked with the England international in case of Leeds being relegated from the Premier League with only a handful of days left in the season.
Merson admitted it would be an “unbelievable” move for Phillips, who could then play under one of the best midfielders England has ever seen in the shape of Steven Gerrard.

Writing in his latest column for Sky Sports late on Tuesday night [17 May], Merson shared why it would be a great move for both parties should it happen.
“I don’t think Phillips is too good for Aston Villa, who have been linked with him recently,” he wrote.
“It’s a massive football club and he would be playing under one of the greatest English footballers of our generation in Gerrard. So Villa would be an unbelievable move for him.”

Dream.
This would be the perfect signing this summer.
Imagine if Leeds drop down into the Championship and then Aston Villa take their best player, there would be outrage across in West Yorkshire.
Phillips would fit what the Villa need perfectly too, with question marks surrounding Douglas Luiz’s ability to marshall the back four and as well as his own future being linked with an exit himself.
Gerrard will want someone he knows can mix it with the best in the Premier League with the goal of pushing for European football next season, and that defensive anchor in midfield in the shape of Phillips would fit the bill.
It may only happen if Leeds are relegated though, with a new contract already being spoken about should they remain in the top flight.
Time will tell, but this is certainly one to watch in the coming weeks as the season ends and the summer begins.
