Steven Gerrard ‘recruiting for XI’ at Aston Villa, expects busy summer

Steven Gerrard has admitted that he is recruiting for the starting lineup this summer at Aston Villa and is expecting a busy transfer window.

Gerrard joined the club in November and signed Lucas Digne, Calum Chambers and Phillipe Coutinho during the January transfer window, but is keen to continue strengthening the side.

Now the boss has admitted, while speaking to Birmingham Mail, that he is looking to sign players for the starting lineup and admitted there will be exits too.

“What we’ve done is analyse this squad all the way through and given opportunities to everyone,” he said.

“We would have liked to have given more opportunities to players who have been injured, like Bertrand Traore and Leon Bailey.

“It’s also important that certain individuals are seen. There is a thinking behind a lot of opportunities but I am looking for a more settled team moving forward.

“We will be recruiting for the XI. But it’s important to play the big picture because there is no doubt there will be some people moving on and there will be incomings as well, and it’s important that both are seen.

“There is a thinking behind it. It’s not me wanting to chop and change and do certain things.”

Progress

It feels like a step in the right direction with those comments after what has been a relatively underwhelming season so far.

Gerrard came in an initially started really well, but there has been a drop off in recent months and the club are likely to finish in the bottom half of the table.

The boss is constantly speaking about how he wants to progress the club forward and work for European football, so adding quality additions to the lineup is a great place to start.

That makes current starters compete for their place in the lineup and provides quality depth and competition for places, which is key when looking to be successful.

With money to spend and his eye firmly on big targets for the team, fans can finally look forward and have something to be excited about for next season.
