View: Aston Villa must ignore Luis Suarez signing this summer, he’s past it

Aston Villa want a new striker this summer and one name that keeps coming up in newspaper articles or fan conversations is Luis Suarez.

The former Liverpool and Barcelona man has been at Atletico Madrid for two seasons, leading them to an incredible La Liga title win in his first season.

He was fuelled by anger and a point to prove following his sale at the Camp Nou, and he ensured they paid for it heavily by scoring the goal that clinched the title.

But this season at the Wanda Metropolitano, the legendary Uruguayan has found himself sidelined by Diego Simeone and out of the team more often than he’s in it.

Considering his reputation and goal record last season, it’s hard to imagine how he can be left out of the side when they struggle to score goals so often.

But the reason for his omission is pretty simple when you put yourself through watching a full game these days – he’s finished.

He’s lost several yards of pace which means he can’t get away from defenders like he used to, and while his passing is still excellent his willingness to hit the ground from any contact means he rarely makes it stick.

At 35-years-old his best years are way beyond him. The idea of a reunion with Steven Gerrard certainly brings together romantic ideas of success and glory, but that is a fantasy.

Suarez is an all-time great striker, but father time remains undefeated. He’s not who he once was and with the expectation he’d come with and wages he’d demand he’s just not worth the circus.

Villa and Gerrard would be much better off scouring the market and finding someone else that can bring something to the squad that’s more than just their reputation.

He’d be a great signing for the engagement on social media and when you’re writing out starting lineups on paper, but in reality he just isn’t that guy anymore.
