Preston manager wants Cameron Archer to extend loan stay from Aston Villa

Preston manager Ryan Lowe is keen to retain Aston Villa loanee Cameron Archer’s services for the 2022/23 season.

Archer, 20, currently has six goals in 14 games for the Lilywhites, scoring and being awarded man of the match in their 1-0 derby win over Blackpool on Tuesday [5 April].

Lowe believes another season at Championship level would be fantastic for his development.

Lowe told Sky Sports, as quoted by Deepdale Digest this week: “We’ll try and get him back next season if Villa sign a few big hitters because I think another year with us would be fantastic for his development.”

The strikers’ current form means Lowe will face stiff competition if he wishes to lure Archer back to Deepdale next season.

Express Sport [23 March] claim there has been interest from the Bundesliga, which could see Archer follow the likes of Jude Bellingham and previously Jadon Sancho to Germany.

How good is Archer?

The 20-year-old was a wanted man in January, with a host of Championship and League One clubs vying for his signature.

Archer is currently averaging 0.73 goals per game and was the top-scorer in this season’s EFL trophy.

Archer has thrived off being deadly from within the penalty box, with fast, low, and accurate strikes finding the corners often.

As shown by these three finishes, the England under-20 international thrives off finding space inside the box and then finding the corners with relative ease.

In the victory over Blackpool, Archer only had four touches in the opposition penalty area (Wyscout) but still managed to find the back of the net, showing his clinical nature in front of goal.

With 17 goals across all competitions, Archer is certainly a talent that Steven Gerrard needs to make a decision on come summer.

If he decides to let him go, they won’t be short of suiters.
