Oscar Mingueza to Aston Villa: Everything said about Villa Park switch as Celta Vigo release statement
Oscar Mingueza has been heavily linked with a move to Aston Villa in recent months.
The Spaniard has been on Villa's radar since January 2025, with Unai Emery said to be an admirer of his.
With Roberto Olabe now at the helm, it would be no surprise if more Spaniard's come to B6, with Mingueza one who could this summer.
The defender was previously valued at around £10.5million, and has had multiple Premier League clubs tracking him.
The Villans have been keeping their cards close to their chest regarding the Celta Vigo star, whose contract was always likely to expire in June.
Now, Celta Vigo have released a statement which may intrigue Villa even more so.
Oscar Mingueza leaves Celta Vigo amid Aston Villa links
Celta Vigo announced on their club website this Tuesday that Mingueza is one of several players who have left following the expiration of their respective contracts.
The 27-year-old was said to have been offered a new contract by Celta Vigo in April, but after rejecting an offer, it always seemed likely he was going to leave.
Villa remained interested in Mingueza following news of broken-down contract talks, but could now sign him for free.
The former Barcelona man also separated from his long-time agent Josep Maria Orobitg, joining a new British agency, Unique Sports Group.
According to ESPN in January of 2025, Villa were previously weighing up whether to sign Mingueza amid ongoing PSR concerns.
The Villans now have the chance to sign the versatile defender for free, with Emery a long-term admirer.
Aston Villa's main competition to sign Mingueza
Mingueza played 34 times for Celta Vigo in La Liga last season, and after another impressive season, he will be on the list of multiple European sides.
Villa are working to sign right-back Emerson Royal, and though Mingueza offers cover in that position too, his versatility may be of appreciation to Emery.
The former Spain international can play all the way up the right-hand side, and the same can be said on the other flank of play.
