Leon Goretzka's Aston Villa contract assessed with debut in pipeline
Aston Villa are yet to see Leon Goretzka feature after his free transfer.
The Germany international was a surprise addition to Unai Emery's squad over the summer.
After departing Bayern Munich, he had been without a club until the Villans swooped in for his signature.
His experience looked to be exactly what was needed after such a turbulent transfer window in B6.
The problem is that without a pre-season, the midfielder has been unable to get up to the required fitness level.
Goretzka has been unable to make his debut, but has many years to make good on his contract as we assess what we know.
What is Leon Goretzka's contract situation at Aston Villa?
The 31-year-old is coming off the back of eight years featuring at the top level in Bavaria.
Having featured over 300 times for Bayern Munich, he has seven Bundesliga titles and one Champions League to his name.
It seems that his race was run under Vincent Kompany and he was allowed to depart the Allianz Arena.
Goretzka completed a switch to Villa Park on a free transfer and put pen to paper on a deal until the summer of 2028.
As part of that two-year contract, he will reportedly earn a figure in the region of £150,000-per-week.
That clocks up to a yearly salary of approximately £7.8million, costing Villa around £15.6m across his current deal.
That could prove to be money well spent, but only if Goretzka can actually get on the pitch.
When could Goretzka make his Aston Villa debut?
The 1995-born midfielder hasn't even been declared fit enough to make a single matchday squad under Emery.
That simply has to change after the international break.
Goretzka will have been working on his fitness and may have taken advantage of friendlies booked in by the B6 outfit.
If he can reach the level set out at Bodymoor Heath, a debut could await in the next Premier League outing against Brentford.
If that comes too soon, the Champions League meeting with Fenerbahce at Villa Park could see the German wear claret and blue for the first time.
Everyone involved will be keen to see what he can bring to the squad as perfect depth and competition for Boubacar Kamara and Joao Gomes.
