Aston Villa are making a move to sign Leon Goretzka on a free transfer.

The Villans are in desperate need of midfield reinforcements in the final week of the window.

A move for Joao Palhinha had been on the cards, but a deal always looked difficult with Bayern Munich.

The Portugal international now looks set to join Benfica and leave Unai Emery searching for new options.

It seems that the B6 outfit have found one in the shape of the 31-year-old.

Goretzka could soon be revealed in claret and blue as we assess what demands he could make at Bodymoor Heath.

When could Leon Goretzka sign for Aston Villa?

The German is coming off the back of eight years as a regular with Bayern Munich.

He featured over 310 times for the Bundesliga giants and lifted 18 pieces of silverware in that time

His time at the Allianz came to an end when last season finished and he is now a free agent.

Fabrizio Romano reported on Saturday that the midfielder has reached a verbal agreement to join the Villans.

He has already held talks with Emery and is now set to undergo his medical next week ahead of signing his contract.

That could see a deal be secured well before the window closes, despite that being irrelevant as a free transfer.

What wages could Goretzka demand?

There will, of course, then be discussions about his salary.

After so long at Bayern, there will be fears of how much he was being paid.

In Bavaria, he was earning a reported £6m-per-year in net wages, which roughly equates to £115,000 a week.

That would be a justifiable fee for the Villans to fork out, although he could demand more given that he is coming in on a free.

Typically these sorts of deals come with inflated contracts, so Goretzka is likely to follow suit.

What squad number could Goretzka wear at Aston Villa?

The German has worn various numbers throughout his career whether at Bochum, Schalke or Bayern Munich.

His youth days consisted of the 10 or six, before starting his senior career with 18.

He went on to take the eight at Schalke, before returning to 18 at Bayern and then the eight after three seasons at the Allianz.

Unfortunately for Goretzka, those numbers are all taken at Villa Park with Ross Barkley, Boubacar Kamara and Tammy Abraham wearing them.

That could see a new number occupy his back in claret and blue, unless Abraham makes a late summer exit and the 18 becomes available.
