How much Aston Villa will land for Leon Bailey as Olympiacos transfer sealed

Leon Bailey has finally completed his Aston Villa exit in a surprise move to Olympiacos.

There has been plenty of noise surrounding the Jamaica international throughout the transfer window.

It had looked as if he was going to join Hull City as a move looked set to go through at one stage.

That was pulled at the last minute as the goalposts continued to be moved by his representatives.

It then looked as if the winger would be stuck at Villa Park until at least January.

That was until Olympiacos came in to wrap up a quick deal to take Bailey off Villa's hands.

There was a desire to get the 29-year-old out the door as his time in B6 looked to be done.

His form has been largely terrible for a long time now and things never looked like improving.

Unai Emery appreciated the work he has put in, but knew that he'd reached the end of his time in claret and blue.

That is why it was so frustrating that he hadn't sealed a move away from the Midlands.

Villa have now got their wish as Bailey has officially signed for Olympiacos.

Jacob Tanswell reported on Wednesday that the deal has been wrapped up quickly as the Villans stepped up efforts within 48 hours before the move.

The Athletic journalist says the fee involved is £3.4million, representing a drop from the £6.8m that Hull were reportedly going to pay earlier in the summer.

Was Bailey a success for Aston Villa?

The Jamaican was brought in as part of the trio to replace Jack Grealish.

Alongside Emi Buendia and Danny Ings, the three were meant to represent a new age for the B6 outfit.

It's fair to say that it never quite worked out that way, even if Bailey and Buendia had some great moments in claret and blue.

The man signed from Bayer Leverkusen will be remembered for the 2023/24 season where he scored 14 and assisted 13 in all competitions as Villa qualified for the Champions League and reached the Conference League semi-final.

He was simply electric that year, but has never been able to replicate it since.

That sums up his problems under Emery and is exactly why he's been forced out.

Bailey was worth the move simply for that season alone, even if parts of his spell have been disappointing.
