Fabrizio Romano shares final Aston Villa decision on Ian Maatsen as Manchester United eye transfer

Aston Villa look set to keep Ian Maatsen at the club beyond the summer transfer window.

The Villans have seen several of their first-team squad depart during a busy summer at Villa Park.

Morgan Rogers, Ezri Konsa, Emi Martinez, Youri Tielemans, Ollie Watkins, and Lucas Digne have all moved on.

It has meant Villa have had to rebuild, with the likes of Nicolas Jackson, Alejandro Garnacho, Joao Gomes, Johan Manzambi, Matteo Ruggeri, Zion Suzuki, and Leon Goretzka all joining Unai Emery's squad.

Now, it looks as though Villa have made their minds up on the future of left-back Maatsen, who has been tracked by Manchester United.

What have Aston Villa decided on Ian Maatsen's future?

The Red Devils have been looking for another option at left-back to provide competition for Luke Shaw.

One-cap Netherlands international Maatsen had been on the radar of Michael Carrick's men.

However, Fabrizio Romano provided a new update on Monday to report that Villa have no interest in selling this window.

The noted Italian journalist said that Villa consider Maatsen "untouchable" and a "key player", and as such will not consider a sale.

It will be welcome news to Villa's fanbase, who will be reluctant to see too many other first-team regulars sold before Tuesday's deadline.

It does feel like the noise surrounding Villa's transfer window has been much louder by those not associated with the club than those who are.

There is little point in denying that the talent they have lost this summer is not a blow, because some excellent players have departed the club.

But it is not the first time Villa have been in this situation, and Unai Emery is a master of recycling his squad and still getting the best out of his team.

However, you have to stem the bleeding eventually, and having already replaced on left-back in Digne with Ruggeri, it makes perfect sense not to sanction Maatsen's exit.

With very limited time left to bring in a replacement, keeping Maatsen in the building felt rather important.
