Aston Villa look set to miss out on the race to sign Giovani Lo Celso as Tottenham have reached an agreement with Real Betis, according to Charlie Gordon.

The journalist reported for The Express's online edition on Friday (30 August) that Lo Celso is set to join LaLiga side Betis in a last-gasp transfer before the 11pm deadline.

Villa are credited with showing an interest, but Lo Celso always preferred a move to Spain and all that remains for the deal to go through is the final documents being signed.

Aston Villa miss out on transfer target

Quite how interested Aston Villa were in Lo Celso remains to be seen, but there was clearly some interest there.

Lo Celso brings Premier League and European experience, but this transfer just was not to be - and it is certainly not the end of the world for the Villans.

Supporters are eager for another new signing to be brought on board before the transfer window closes, but only if the right targets are available.

Lo Celso is unfortunately not the player he was previously, which explains why Tottenham are eager to offload this window.

If Villa do not make another signing, it has still be a positive window on the whole, as Unai Emery said at his press conference on Friday (30 August).

Adding Lo Celso as a squad player would have been smart, but this is not a deal the Villans will regret not pursuing further.
