Aston Villa stuck with Tammy Abraham as Dominic Calvert-Lewin regret raised

Aston Villa look unlikely to move on Tammy Abraham this summer.

The Englishman completed a Villa Park return in January in a surprise deal with Besiktas.

It’s fair to say that the B6 faithful were delighted to see him back, seven years after his initial loan move in the Championship.

Things certainly haven’t gone so well after his move with minutes being at a premium in claret and blue.

That has left many to question whether Abraham could leave Villa in the summer while they regret not signing Dominic Calvert-Lewin instead.

Aston Villa won’t be able to sell Tammy Abraham

The 28-year-old came in with plenty of experience of the Premier League and beyond, but that hasn’t truly shone through.

He has largely sat and watched from the bench since his return as Ollie Watkins maintained his spot as the go-to man.

That doesn’t reflect well on the former Chelsea man, especially after a spending around £20million on his signature just five months ago.

Many have suggested he could be on his way out of the Midlands in a move elsewhere in the Premier League, although that may not be so easy.

Former Villa scout Bryan King can’t see anyone paying what the Villans would demand and has questioned why Dominic Calvert-Lewin wasn’t signed for free before he Abraham came in.

Speaking exclusively to Villa News, King said: “I think they’ll struggle to make a profit on him.

“I think Villa missed out on getting Dominic Calvert-Lewin for nothing before buying Abraham.

“He was brought in because they needed bodies at the time, but he hasn’t worked out.

“Unless they find a replacement, he’ll stay where he is. They won’t get £25m for him to make a profit now, who would pay that?”

Calvert-Lewin was loosely linked to Villa before joining Leeds, leaving many to question what could have been.

Aston Villa could have signed Dominic Calvert-Lewin

The England international’s reputation was at a low when he departed Everton at the end of his contract 12 months ago.

For anyone to take a chance on him was going to be a risk, but he could have been a point of difference in this Villa side.

Calvert-Lewin would have offered something else that Watkins and Donyell Malen, at the time, didn’t.

A move never happened and he obviously ended up at Leeds where he has done excellent work to help them remain in the Premier League.

His 16 goal involvements across all competitions is nothing to be sniffed at and would have been welcome in B6.

Abraham needs to look at that and assess what he can do differently to replicate that output if he is to stay at Villa Park for the foreseeable.
