Aston Villa are reportedly mulling over a move for Matias Fernandez-Pardo; a player described as having "impatience" when it comes to his gametime.

Villa are understood to have sent scouts to watch the Belgian forward in action at this summer's World Cup.

No bid is reported to be on the table for the 21-year-old just yet, but Villa Park chiefs appear to see something they like in the Lille starlet.

Fernandez-Pardo played four minutes in Belgium's 1-1 opening group stage draw with Egypt on Monday night, and looks set to play a backup role in Rudi Garcia's side.

After netting eight goals and providing five assists from 29 Ligue 1 games last season, the young attacker is one of the hottest young properties in France.

However, with the Villans said to be weighing up a move for him, their biggest worry shouldn't be whether or not he's got the ability to make the transition to the Premier League.

What has been said about Matias Fernandez-Pardo's attitude?

When Fernandez-Pardo signed for Lille in the summer of 2024, it wasn't the first time he'd put pen to paper with them.

Indeed, after spending time with Belgian sides Anderlecht and Mechelen, he signed for Lille's academy in 2014.

Remaining there until 2020, the striker eventually decided to leave the French outfit in order to return to Belgium, this time with Gent.

As detailed in a 2025 interview with L'Equipe via the official Ligue 1 website, ex-Lille recruiter Francois Vitali spoke of his experience working with Fernandez-Pardo, and why it was he decided to leave.

"Matias didn't get the signs that he expected," Vitali said. "He was asking himself whether he would play.

"He and his family had set a high bar and that is where his impatience was born."

Fernandez-Pardo would soon start impressing in Gent's academy side, before eventually ascending to their first-team ranks in the 2022-23 season.

He would score 10 times in 28 senior outings for Gent, before Lille eventually came back in for him in the summer of 2024, and signed him for €10million euros (£8.6m).

Aston Villa may not be right for Fernandez-Pardo

The fact that he showed "impatience" because he wanted a better chance to go and play football elsewhere shouldn't be held against Fernandez-Pardo.

In fact, it should be praised, as this was a young player not willing to sit around at a higher profile club when what he perceived to be a more fruitful avenue to senior football presented itself to him elsewhere.

But, if this unwillingness to sit on his hands and show an extended amount of patience is still part of his mindset, then Aston Villa may not be the right move for him.

Ollie Watkins is 30 but still scored 16 Premier League goals last season, and is contracted at Villa Park until the summer of 2028.

Meanwhile, Tammy Abraham is tied down in the West Midlands until the summer of 2030, and is a solid backup centre-forward option to have.

Then you've got the fact that Villa have already gone out of their way to sign a highly-rated young striker in Brian Madjo, and won't want to put too many roadblocks in his way to first-team stardom either.

However, Fernandez-Pardo did split his time as a striker and a winger for Lille last season, so despite being a centre-forward by trade, he's evidently capable of playing out wide too.

But in the likes of Emi Buendia, Alysson and John McGinn respectively, Unai Emery has some quality options down the flanks, and so the Belgian would find stern competition here too.

Fernandez-Pardo isn't short of interest this summer, and so perhaps he will see a move to Villa Park as one that doesn't present his best opportunity to play regular football moving forward.
