Aston Villa have made Donyell Malen their number 1 transfer target in January, according to the Telegraph.

The news outlet reported on 2 January that Borussia Dortmund are open to selling him this month.

Unai Emery wants a new winger in the coming weeks and the club are exploring a £25million deal for the Netherlands international.

Aston Villa must bring down the transfer valuation of Donyell Malen

Villa's interest in Malen as their top transfer target this January, with a £25million price tag, might be seen as somewhat steep considering his current standing at Borussia Dortmund.

The 25-year-old is not a priority at Dortmund, starting just six of his thirteen league matches this season, suggesting he's not a key part of their plans.

This presents Villa with an opportunity to negotiate a lower fee.

Given Malen's desire for more playing time, especially with his contract running for another 18 months, a lowball offer could be compelling.

While moving from Dortmund to Villa Park would be viewed as a sideways move, the prospect of playing in the Champions League could be a significant draw for Malen.

Thus, Villa could leverage their European football status to secure Malen at a bargain, potentially below the £25million asked, enhancing their squad without breaking the bank.
