Aston Villa are looking to build on an incredible 2025-26 season, as they return to the Champions League.

At the same time, Unai Emery's side are looking to continue their progression as a club fighting at the top end of the Premier League.

For this to happen, a big transfer window is in order, following a run of disappointing summers in recent years.

Out of the handful of last year's arrivals, only Victor Lindelof heads into the summer with his head held high, with others failing to make an impact at Villa Park.

This cannot happen again, with Emery's squad in need of a refresh, after the Spaniard has spent the best part of four years working miracles with largely the same group.

And after the recent reveal surrounding target Matias Soule and Borussia Dortmund, fans in the Midlands will hope that it is not a sign of things to come.

Matias Soule reveal may spark Aston Villa panic as transfer window opens

With the transfer window officially opening on Monday, now is the time when supporters begin to get excited about who could be wearing their colours next term.

Roma wideman Soule has been mentioned as a Villa target in recent weeks, with the Argentine looking to leave the Italian capital this summer.

Last week, Gazzetta dello Sport reported that Soule was of interest to Borussia Dortmund, alongside the Villans and Bournemouth from the Premier League

Crucially, it was said that the 23-year-old favours a move to England, after both English clubs mentioned have tested the waters.

However, Gianluca Di Marzio of Sky Sports Italy now reports that German giants Dortmund are leading the race for his signature, with the interest from Die Schwarzgelben said to be the most concrete.

While his record of 12 goals and 13 assists across two years at the Olimpico is not spectacular, the Argentine would represent a real change of direction at Villa Park, and missing out on him could kickstart another poor window.

Aston Villa must begin to make statements - Matias Soule would be a big one

Graduating from the Juventus academy, Soule would join Roma in 2024 after a sensational spell on loan at Frosinone.

With a wand of a left foot and superb creative instincts, he has remained a huge threat, despite his numbers not exactly sticking out.

For important context, though, his 5,002 minutes across all competitions in two years only narrowly beat the 4,564 of Morgan Rogers this term - with the pair putting up a similar contribution record in a similar amount of minutes.

Capable of playing out on the flank or in an attacking midfield role, he would bring versatility and quality.

Most importantly, it would finally signal a shift to a focus on youth in B6.

Since his arrival, Emery has made use of what is the same squad in the majority - continuing to extract everything.

But, a refresh is going to be needed sooner rather than later, and a statement of Soule's ilk would be huge for a side returning to the Champions League, and looking to make another dent in the Premier League.

Villa cannot afford another poor transfer window, and must finally end what has been a lacklustre run in this regard.
