Why George Hemmings must cement Aston Villa role as John McGinn makes 'first class' claim

John McGinn has been left wildly impressed with Aston Villa youngster George Hemmings.

The academy product has been given a more senior role throughout the early parts of the season and during pre-season.

Hemmings started in the UEFA Super Cup final, and then was handed a Premier League start against Brighton.

While the result did not go the Villans' way, Hemmings would have been proud to get the nod in Unai Emery's plans.

And he will be hoping for more chances throughout the season.

Now, Villa captain McGinn has laid the gauntlet down with Hemmings needing to back up the Scotsman's words.

Aston Villa have seen plenty of change within their squad this summer and that has opened up gaps for youth players to burst into.

One player who has undoubtedly taken his chance so far is Hemmings and his efforts are not going unnoticed by his teammates.

Speaking on The Overlap, McGinn singled out Hemmings as a player he expects to have a key role for Aston Villa.

He said: "George from the first day, his attitude of willing to learn, willing to listen. You shout at him, and there is no tutting or shaking his head, and he was first-class in the Super Cup, and he will be a big player for us."

In that game against PSG, Hemmings was certainly positive on the ball. According to Sofascore, he frequently looked to carry the ball upfield with a total of 15 carries.

Additionally, he ended the 90 minutes with 46.8 metres of progressive carrying distance.

Hemmings also produced one key pass and could have had a goal with him being credited for having one big chance missed.

However, with his inexperience, that effort will be a learning curve for the Villa man.

Hemmings will now be looking ahead to Villa's next match in the Premier League with hopes of scoring or assisting his first top-flight goal.

The suspension to Joao Gomes will certainly increase his chances of gaining another opportunity this weekend.

With limited midfield options at his disposal, McGinn may need to be dropped back into the midfield two, with Ross Barkley continuing in the number 10 role.

While, Emi Buendia is likely to stay up front as the striker shortage at Villa Park looks to try to be resolved.

Hemmings may remain out on the left wing, with the likes of Alysson or Alejandro Garnacho filling out on the right.
