Why George Hemmings faces fresh Aston Villa frustration ahead of Brentford showdown
George Hemmings may in for a reality check as Aston Villa prepare to return against Brentford.
The Villans return to Premier League action against the Bees on 10 October on home turf.
Unai Emery has some tough selection decisions to make, and one of them is Hemmings' involvement at Villa Park.
The 19-year-old has played in all five league matches so far, starting in four of them, in an impressive start to the campaign.
However, he may face frustration when Emery makes his selection for the game against Keith Andrews' side.
His cameo against Tottenham and other circumstances at Villa could go against him at the moment.
Why George Hemmings' position is under question at Aston Villa
Hemmings eventually got on the pitch against Spurs, but he did not impress in his cameo.
He had just six touches in that victory, with none coming within the opposition box.
The academy graduate created zero chances, not recording a single shot, per FotMob data.
He also lost all four ground duels that he attempted, which will not have impressed Emery at all.
The Spaniard may well choose to go with Alejandro Garnacho instead in the starting line-up, with Ibrahim Mbaye another option.
Why Garnacho may be ready to step up
Garnacho has played just 31 minutes of competitive action for the B6 side so far this season, since his loan move from Chelsea.
He was an unused substitute against Nottingham Forest, Coventry and Spurs, and Emery confirmed he was not ready.
He said: "Garnacho is a little bit behind, because of some circumstances we had in pre-season.
"It is time to be patient for the time he needs."
However, Garnacho has scored in the two friendly games in the break, a 1-0 win over Southampton and a 3-1 win over Sevilla.
He now looks ready to kick on, and that could spell trouble for Hemmings' chances in the side going forward.
The youngster has had a stunning breakthrough this season, but it may put on the back burner, if his Argentinian teammate can hit full form in the next few weeks.
It would be shame, but the 22-year-old is more experienced and is a better play when he is up to speed.
That remains to be seen but it does provide an interesting problem for Emery, as he ponders his team for the return to club football.
