Why Brian Madjo’s injury setback is a nightmare for Unai Emery

Aston Villa's rising star Brian Madjo has been ruled out for six weeks.

The Villans were engaged in a battle with FIFA to get the 17-year-old registered.

They won their appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) earlier this month and he was then allowed to play for the club.

He made an instant impact in the 2-1 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup, notching the first-half leveller.

He looks like he will be a real problem for Ollie Watkins, when it comes to who will be the starting number nine.

However, he is now set for a spell on the sidelines, which could harm Unai Emery's plans in the coming weeks.

How did Brian Madjo put himself in contention for Aston Villa starting gig?

Emery will have wanted to rely on Madjo in the next few weeks, after his display against the Champions League winners on Wednesday in Salzburg.

However, a report from The Athletic on Friday claimed that he picked up an injury that will keep him out until September.

He was immense, taking six shots in that contest, and creating two chances, per Fotmob data.

The Luxembourg international ended the game with nine touches in the opposition box.

He was a constant menace for the PSG defence, and could have doubled his goal tally when he hit the woodwork.

Jeff Stelling was blown away by his showing, speaking on talkSPORT on Thursday, he said: "My view was, he had a terrific night.

"He had a lorry load of chances and, to his credit, he kept getting them. He's a unit and he's a nuisance as well."

The young star did his first-team chances no harm, but now the injury setback will see him sidelined.

It will be a nightmare for Emery, given where Watkins is in terms of his match fitness.

He missed the clash with Luis Enrique's side due to his involvement in England's World Cup campaign.

The boss has given him and others like Emi Buendia and Emi Martinez four weeks off, meaning that they won't be fully sharp when the season comes around

Madjo would likely have been named as the starter in the first few weeks of the campaign, as Watkins worked his way back into the equation.

Now, though, he may be rushed back into action, which increase his chances of suffering an issue.
