Why Aston Villa star Matty Cash raised early concerns in Poland's 6-0 rout vs Romania
Matty Cash and Poland ran out as 6-0 winners against Romania but things looked shaky early on for the Aston Villa man.
The 27-year-old has been a mainstay in the Poland setup ever since he made the decision to switch his allegiance.
So far in this international break, Cash has started in all three of Poland's fixtures.
With the latest being a mammoth 6-0 win for the Poles in League B of the UEFA Nations League.
Cash was handed 63 minutes to impress, as he looks to try to win back his Aston Villa place after being dropped in the last two games.
And here is how the Polish media have reacted to that performance.
How have the Polish media reacted to Matty Cash vs Romania?
The Polish media were left with a mixed impression of Matty Cash’s performance, with the Aston Villa defender coming in for criticism despite showing some promising moments.
According to Goal Poland, Cash produced a three-out-of-five performance for his nation.
They state: "It wasn't a standout performance from the Aston Villa player. In any case, it was clear to the naked eye that Cash is much more comfortable in a back four than when the Polish team plays with a back three.
"Overall, he played very sparingly against the Romanians, focusing on defensive duties. It's possible that this was the goal imposed by the Polish manager."
After the early moments of the match, there were a few concerns over the 29-year-old in that back-three formation, although he did grow into the game.
Polskie Radio 24 awarded him a six out of 10, despite saying: "From the first few minutes, it seemed he wasn't feeling very confident."
The media publication would go on to state: "He hampered some of the Polish national team's moves, and one could have expected him to be more dynamic on the right flank.
"He also produced a few wonderful, well-timed crosses. He desperately wanted to capitalize on the Romanians' significant second-half retreat, but he finished the match goalless."
Overall, Cash won't be too overly pleased with his performance, but will be delighted his country got all three points.
There is one more game left for Poland in this international window, with an away trip to Bosnia and Herzegovina looming.
Cash will be hoping to be involved in a four-man defence this time around as Poland set-up in the reverse fixture.
Was the Polish media's verdict correct on Cash?
Romania barely laid a jab on Poland so Cash did not have much to deal with defensively, making just one interception and two clearances as per FotMob.
He was also only involved in one duel, in which he was unsuccessful with.
In the 90 minutes, the Poles ultimately dominated in attack, but the 27-year-old, who is usually known for presence in the forward areas was nowhere to be seen.
Cash barely ventured forward, and attempted just two crosses throughout the game.
He failed to carve out any chances for Poland, but as the national media suggest, that may have been by design.
So, while the media has been slightly harsh in some of their wording of Cash's performance, there won't be much concern back at Villa Park for Unai Emery.
The defender was asked to complete a job that he is not typically known for, while allowing the rest of his midfield and forward teammates to get the joy in the 6-0 rout.
