Jamie Carragher has predicted disappointment of sorts when Aston Villa take on Fenerbahce in the Champions League.

The Villans kicked off their league phase campaign with a 3-2 win away at Club Brugge last month.

Unai Emery's men now welcome Fenerbahce to Villa Park on Wednesday evening, before hosting Norwegian minnows Viking a week later.

Six points from six will be the target for Emery, knowing a trip to Barcelona then awaits early next month, plus a trip to Turkey to take on Galatasaray.

Fener are the only Turkish team on Villa's minds right now, though, with the Super Lig side looking to build on a 1-1 home draw against Roma last time out in the competition.

Carragher has now given his prediction for the match, and he does not expect it to play out the way the history books suggest it should.

What scoreline is Jamie Carragher predicting in Aston Villa vs Fenerbahce?

Villa's below-par start to the Premier League season continued with a 2-2 draw against Brentford at the weekend.

Far more is required, and a return to European action is a great way for the Villans to truly kickstart their campaign.

Villa have been a real force on home soil in European competitions, too, having won each of their last 10 matches at Villa Park.

Only twice this century - Manchester City (2022-24) and Manchester United (2006-08) - have English sides enjoyed longer such runs.

Fenerbahce, meanwhile are on a nine-game winless run in the Champions League, which is just one short of their worst-ever record.

And as per Opta, Villa have won all three meetings they have previously had with Fenerbahce, including a 1-0 Europa League win in January.

Only against Bologna (4/4) do Villa have a better 100 per cent record than they boast in this fixture.

And in a further positive omen, Emery is unbeaten in three previous matches as a coach against Villa's next opponents.

Carragher is clearly paying no attention to those stats, however, as he has gone with a 1-1 draw in his Sky Sports Super 6 predictions.

That would be a disappointing result for Villa all things considered, with this a game they should really be targeting three points from.

Where are Aston Villa predicted to finish in Champions League?

Villa know what it takes to get through in the Champions League, with supporters expectant of reaching the knockout stages.

Opta Analyst's supercomputer expects them to do just that, with an eighth-place finish projected in the league phase.

From there it is anyone's guess, but anything less than a win in midweek would see those projections alter.
